| The following information was obtained by the webmaster from a scrapbook put together by former CCRS member Mildred Reynolds. The value of information & pictures enclosed in that scrapbook is immeasurable. For the vast amount of hours she put into the preparation of that scrapbook, and what it stands for, we are greatly indebted. |
| The Craig County Rescue Squad got its start in 1968, with the help of Fort Lewis Rescue Squad's Instructor, Liburn W. Gray who taught both standard & advanced first aid at the New Castle Fire Department Building. Nine men & eight women completed both courses. The crew's first ambulance was a 1960 Ford Station Wagon. There were 3 calls recorded for December 28 & 30, 1968. In the first 10 months of operation, the crew logged 14,000 miles and answered 189 calls. The top floor of the Farmer's & Merchants Bank Building in New Castle was the first headquarters for the crew. Buddy Boitnott was the crew's first Captain. In 1970, a Chevrolet Carryall was purchased as well as a 1967 model Chevrolet Carryall 4-wheel drive. Both vehicles were converted into ambulances. The Craig County Rescue Squad Crew Hall was constructed and began operation in 1970 on land that was donated by Miss Kate Layman & Miss Margaret Showalter. In March 1973, Mildred Reynolds was the first woman voted into the squad for regular duty. Nina Davis, Mary Hypes and Sarah Elmore joined the crew that year as well. In July 1974, the Squad purchased a Green & White Chevrolet Van. The van was used for the first time as an ambulance on August 29, 1974.
